Return Receipts & Trust

Emails with return receipts are ok when it is really necessary. When people use return receipts too frequently, two things happen:

  • The recipient gets annoyed
  • Trust between the sender and the recipient gets eroded. When you
over use return receipt, you are sending out an implicit message that
you don’t trust that the recipient would read your mail otherwise –
This by itself is a disincentive for the recipient to read and reply. A
vicious cycle of mistrust sets in.
